se7enet purgatorio

Bad ideas from years past.

For every one new Se7enet design I release, there are usually quite a few that never see the light of day. Most never even get saved as a file, so they disappear when I close Photoshop. Others do get saved, in various states of completion. Some are no more than logo tests, some make it all the way to being sliced up and ready to export. It is these dead files that I’m going to be presenting you today. The oldest one dates back to 2003, and the newest one was something I was fooling around with a couple months ago. It’s interesting to see how I have progressed – or regressed, as case may be – from quite awhile ago.

Dates and titles mentioned come from the latest file save timestamp, and from the filename it was saved as – in some cases, the filename is different from the title displayed in the image, and in other cases the filename is the only thing I have to determine what my original naming intent was. Click the thumbnails to see the fullsize versions.

First up, from November 9, 2003, is a white version of Se7enet Noir. Noir was always supposed to be black, but this was just a test to see what it would look like if it was white.

Next up is May 9, 2004. This was apparently a typography test. The filename says it’s called “Winter,” so I suppose that’ll have to work.

September 24, 2004 brings us the first of many different attempts to make something called “Heresy.” As you’ll notice later, I’ve been wanting to do a design called Heresy for quite awhile. Also, take note of the fact that this bears a striking resemblance to my “Reset Heresy” Wordpress theme, which actually was released and is available via the theme switcher on the sidebar. This was made at least 6 months before I ever started using Wordpress, and probably a year before that theme was done.

The second attempt at “Heresy” was on December 12, 2004.

Heresy 3. January 11, 2005.

April 3, 2005. The filename on this one was called “Se7enet Black”, though as you can see, I was clearly still stuck on the word Heresy. Though in this particular one, it was probably just a placeholder. Because I do remember intending to call a design Se7enet Black, at one point.

January 25, 2006. This filename was literally called “se7enet_something.psd”. There is no text, no title, no nothing. This must have been just playing around with, well, something.

Next up were two different prototypes (obviously with a very different theme) of the current site design, 7et Twist. The little lime in the first one was actually where I got the name “twist” from. The first one is from March 31, 2006, and the second is from May 5.

And finally, a new test design I was working on a couple months ago. November 19, 2006, to be exact. It’s called “winter/six”.

Well, there you go. That was all the files I found when digging around through my backup drive. No doubt there are dozens more things that I’ve worked on over the years, that never even got saved. But I kind of thought it was fun to peek back into the past a little bit.
