As you've probably noticed, I finally ponied up the cash to get my Threads members area renewal, and the forums have now been upgraded to version 6.5.5, which is (probably) the last version in the v6 line.

I've reset the stylesheet and everything to be stock Threads. There were quite a few little stylesheet changes and stuff that happened between this version and the last version I had (which was 2+ years old) and I didn't feel like updating my styles for a version that was only going to be installed for a couple weeks. So we're all back to the stock Infopop stylesheet.

Lord willing and the creek don't rise, tomorrow is the day when the public beta of v7 will be released, so I'll be playing with that for the next week or two before. I won't update these forums until I've got my new Twist style applied, and until I'm relatively certain that I can apply my Twist style without it getting constantly overwritten in the inevitable beta patches.

So that's the deal. Other than my "fix" to make Threads use sha1 instead of md5 for passwords, this entire board is completely stock now, which will make it easier for the v7 upgrade, when that comes. The upgrade had a lot of database changes, so you all may want to go check/update your profiles and display settings in My Home. Nothing should have been harmed, but it's hard to tell sometimes.

Yeah. I liked the new post count too. The guy who did that template set changed his site, and now I can't find the 6.5 version of them.

It'll only be like this for a week or two. Maybe less, if I do manage to find the upgraded templates.

Shirrah shirrah, teacher!

I re-enabled the full post tracking (# of new threads/posts) and put the Quick Reply box down at the bottom of each thread. Yay for figuring out how to find the features again after Groupee changed the control panel. Hehe.

Full post tracking initially won't be possible in v7 though... Rick has already said that because full post tracking can cause slowdowns, he's not putting it in at first, to make sure that the base code itself is fast enough to handle it.

Also, v7 was supposed to be released yesterday, but I guess they forgot to do any documentation whatsoever, so it's on hold until they get some of that finished. Anyway, once it's out, I'll be making a new test forum where you all can go and play with v7 until I'm totally ready to make the the real production site.

I know you don't care about phpBB, but they just released the first beta of version 3.

The only good thing about phpBB is the small 'X' located in the top right hand corner of your brouser window.

I actually like phpbb originaly. It was very easy to modify. Even with my poor knowledge of html and php at the time.

But compared to other system out there at the moment, nope.

True that, but PHP BB 3 is like an abusive boyfriend, "I changed baby, I won't hit you anymore."

Anyone who thinks Uwe Boll is a good director should be shot in the head.

Getting back to why phpBB sucks...

To me, it seems like it suffers from the same problem as Invision and vBulletin.

They all seem to be born out of Infopop's idealistic refusal to add new features requested by their development community. The development community (UBBDev) comprises a very tiny (but vocal) portion of UBB's userbase, and in the grand scheme of things, most of the features quite honestly weren't needed. So people left that development community and created their own software, the sole purpose of which seemed to be to throw in as many so-called features as possible.

But the features weren't necessarily tested thoroughly, they weren't really all that important, and all it really accomplished was bloating and complicating an otherwise decent system. I'll freely admit that all three are quite powerful pieces of software, and if there's any possible feature that anyone has ever requested, it's probably in there (and most likely enabled by default). But for the vast majority of users, it's simply unnecessary.
