Alright, guys, here's the deal. Most of you, if you have half a brain, should probably have been expecting something like this for awhile. But it's not as bad as you may think.

By now it has probably become obvious that Scourge is no longer one of my priorities. There are many reasons for this, but there are two that are most important. First, I simply don't have all that much free time anymore, and what free time I do have, I'd quite honestly rather spend it doing other things. And second, the game - both developing and playing - is simply not fun for me anymore. The whole reason I created DK, and later Scourge, is because at the time I wanted to have fun playing a web game but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. So I made my own. But it's just no longer fun. And the whole reason for making a game is to have fun with it. When it is no longer fun, it no longer has a purpose.

That being said, I have spent a LOT of time working on it, and y'all have spent a LOT of time playing it, doing mods for the previous game, waiting for the release of this one, etc. So I don't want to waste all that time and effort. I've spent a lot of time over the last few weeks debating what exactly I should do. I could kill it altogether. I could force myself to finish it, charge people for it, and still probably decide I'm sick of it in a few months anyway. I could relinquish all rights to it, toss it into the public domain, and let people have their way with it. None of those are really the right way to go about it, though.

So here's my decision.

I'm going to package up what I have, and release Scourge as it currently exists, for free. It will be under the same license terms I planned for it all along, and all or part of lib.php will be encrypted to prevent people from changing/deleting the copyright. There will be no installer except for a standard-issue .SQL file, nor will there be a control panel. Those up to the challenge will be able to install it, mod it, do whatever they want to it. I will even provide some sort of support/help for it here, if you have any questions about how things work under Scourge. Finally, I will make a Scourge version of the DK Mod Index, where those who do manage to make mods/fixes for the game can release them.

I reserve the right to possibly revisit or revive Scourge in the future, though that seems pretty unlikely at this point. If I ever get laid off and have nothing better to do, you never know. And if I do ever manage to make it any more complete than it is, I also reserve the right to start charging money for it. I'm going to release what I have under the "beta" version heading, so it'll basically mean "maybe not free forever, but at least free for the foreseeable future."

Ok, that's all I got for you. I'll be working on getting the package together this weekend, probably, and getting everything all ready to go. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll answer what I can.

Yeah, I saw this coming. Can I ask for a few things first, as your number one man who will back up your endevours all the way to the top, can you PLEASE put all the copy right information in the package, in each folder, in big letters.

Can you also PLEASE give someone (me) control over the mod index. THe ability to regulate the crap that comes in mod form for the game.

It just so happens this comes at a perfect timing too. Ladies and gents, mostly ladies, I am coming back in the DK/DS scene.. Well, looks like more DS. Ill be working on DS more in the time to come and I WILL be releasing completed mods fully tested with the stock code.

I will also be reviving the guild wars mod too. With this, I will be reopening my personal request access only mod index.

Jamin, with all this stuff going on, would i be able to just refit the DK installer for DS?

I am interested in making mods for it, and to add to it and release new full versions of it.

1. Yeah, I was sort of hoping someone would moderate the mod index. I need to get some sort of control panel written for it, since it's currently all done by hand in PMA. But yeah, you're more than welcome to moderate it if you want.

2. As for the DK installer, it's probably possible to do that. And actually, there are a couple other little cleanup things I need to do to the code before its released. So I may end up doing that myself, just so it's got some sort of installer to cut down on the "wtf is a .SQL file?!" questions.

3. Yup, before it gets released I'll be putting big ol' ugly copyright comment blocks in every file.

Heh. This time Ill be able to provide you with mods too. Of course, I demand credit of the highest order. I already have mods for it.. O: HOW CAN THAT BE! Those mods need to be modified though. Once I get the latest code I'll finaly be able set them in concrete once and for all.

Some of the mods are pretty sweet too.

Ill do more than moderate it.... Ill rule the mod index with an iron fist. Your code better work with the stock code, or... Ill delete you... thats right.. you... Ill to make sure every mod is tested some way or another. I dont want to see another mess of stuff like that in the DK mod index.

I was actually going to get a friend to program an installer for me. A full one with everything. Personaly, I think its a good idea to NOT allow the sql file to install itself. wtf is a.SQL file? Ill tell you what it is. It means my big fat foot into your face.

Sweet. Copy right everywhere. Ill just cut them all out and leave the major one at the bottom. Because Im such an ass.

I have decided after DS is out the first mod I would do for the community is have an installer, this isn't much work and makes it easier for anyone that would like to run the game from a free site host, however, Jamin claimed there was no admin panel so you would need to know some MySQL skills to edit anything, and that leaves me to make an administrator section or the installer... what the hell, I do both if I have time within the first week of DS becoming open source. =)

With no admin panel you can edit everything directly from the database. I did that myself for months.

You've have learned the tricks and trades of the MySQL databases, most other people that use a free host do not get to see the something as easy as phpMyAdmin, but really have to know SQL terms like truncate and/or drop and then have it run it and see if it works, where as you can have a PHP code install and edit all the fields in the MySQL database already.

Thats why I only use paid hosts. Free ones are complete crap. I only pay $4.95 a month, if you can't afford that, you shouldn't be coding at all.

You people are missing out a lot. I dont even use Phpmyadmin. There are other database manipulators out there that make changing tables so much easier. phpmyadmin is terrible for modifying databases.

Jamin, hurry and get Scourge out so I can convert all my work to the right fit.
