For some reason, this computer refuses to accept that it has a cd burner in it. It's my old 600 Athlon; generic cdrw drive in it.

Here's the problem: Whenever I try to use *any* burning software to create a new cd (r or rw), the program freezes and locks up my computer. Whenever I try to access the drive, I get the following error message: F: Is not accessible. Incorrect function.

I've tried updating the drivers and a bunch of other things and it still won't work...

So.... Any suggestions?

Oh, and there were 2 drives, and it didn't work. Both set properly to master and slave, so I took the master drive out (a dvd drive) and now have this one set as master.

It *is* recognized in the hardware profile for the computer which is odd...

Grrr.....

The only thing I can guess would be maybe your IDE cable is connected upside down? Though if that were true, I don't think Windows would see it at all.

What Windows are you using on that box?

One thing I just thought of, that Windows 2000 had some problems with occasionally, is you may need to make sure the drive is configured for DMA support. Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Go into the properties for both the Primary and Secondary IDE channels, and on the Advanced tab, make sure Transfer Mode is set to "DMA If Available" for all devices. Normally this yields better performance for the drive as a whole, but since you're dealing with a burner drive, if it is still set to be using PIO mode, that could be causing the lockups.

Also, one other thing that may help, what kind of motherboard is it? In Device Manager, in the System Devices list, try to find "[Brand] CPU to AGP Controller", "[Brand] CPU to PCI bridge", and "[Brand] PCI to ISA Bridge". Since you're using an Athlon, I'm guessing the brand is either going to be AMD or Via (or Via Tech). If it's a Via motherboard, go here and download/install the latest Via 4-in-1 drivers. If it's AMD, I think this is the page you'll need, but check on the System Requirements section to make sure your motherboard is supported. (Somewhere in that System Devices list of the Device Manager, it should say which chipset your mobo is using.)

Hope this helps.

I think Jamin is right, this sounds like a problem with the chipset drivers. Win2k and XP have some seriously insufficient drivers for chipset shipping on the disk. Updating them should fix the problem, however this kind of thing is difficult to diagnose without being physically at the computer.
