---

And here he was, sitting on a couch thinking about all these things, when he should have been paying attention to what was coming out of his mouth. Not necessarily because he was afraid of what he would say. No, he had no need to fear that, they would take care of what he said. It was more out of curiosity that he wanted to listen to himself. When they took the reigns, it was nice to know exactly what they did. Sometimes they got new ideas, and it was nice to pay attention to the new things so he'd know what to say next time without having to rely on them any more than was necessary.

That was how he told himself that he wasn't crazy. They never overtly took over. Sure, they'd speak for him occasionally, when he was lost in his own thoughts. But they never forced him to do anything. And he never, you know, had demons telling him to sacrifice people, or saw park benches following him or anything. He'd seen crazy people in movies, and heard stories about them, and he was pretty sure he wasn't crazy. So some invisible people whispered things to him occasionally, big deal. Taking the subway home would be a bad idea today.

The doctor was getting up from behind the desk. He glanced at his watch, and saw that his hour was up. How typical. Doctors never treated you like a person, only like a quick way to make a couple hundred bucks an hour. Doctors were good at telling you what you wanted to hear. No sir, you're not crazy. Yes sir, you have every right to think your wife is sleeping around. No sir, you're not unconsciously keeping yourself from getting a raise. In his opinion, the entire line of study for those bent on obtaining psychiatry degrees was nothing more than textbooks full of canned responses, and learning which canned response to use in a given situation.

They took care of the handshakes and expressions of gratitude, while he continued in his own thoughts. He left the doctor's office feeling no better than he had felt on his way in. This was normal, though. A dozen or so doctors in the last three years, and none had ever made him feel remotely close to having a solution. At this point, he wasn't even sure if a solution was what he wanted. It mostly just seemed like, if one was hearing voices, one should probably be seeing a shrink. He assumed that when it was time to stop going to doctors, he would know. Until then, he had nothing better to do. I fucking told you don't take the subway.

Then she came along. And she ruined everything.
